There are a lot of options to replace LOLth, but none of them particularly inspire confidence. Hopefully the ECB will work out their problems with Compton and bring him back.

Hales FC average: 38.94

Lyth FC average: 41.21

Lyth > Hales

Gooch averaged 12.12 in 1981, while Lyth averaged 12.77 in 2015.

Lyth > Gooch

Are you having a fucking laugh, Matt?

You would take an opener who is averaging under 20 in 7 tests, which even that is padded by 1 century?

You're on drugs.

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
Lyth got a rip snorter. Only a good player would have hit that.

Deserves to go to the UAE and face military medium and dobbers on the roads out there.

As Gary Ballance and James Hildreth hit sparkling 150+ scores to put pressure on the middle order.

17 year old Sam Curran is making huge strides and currently has the remarkable First Class stats of:

Batting Average: 102.00
Bowling Average: 21.27

Making him, at present, the greatest cricketer of all time.

His 20 year old brother Tom also boasts impressive stats of:

Batting Average: 14.62
Bowling Average: 26.04

With the Currans and the Overtons on the horizon, England's brotherly love could see them show that Family does indeed come 1st!

This series has been so lop sided one way or another in each test it's just insane. Suppose it just shows how much of the batting side of the game is pressure related and about mental strength.

I need Lyth to get 180 to win my series runs bet, looking fairly unlikely.

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
Got the technique for opening, don't get me wrong it might not work, but one thing is for sure, he shouldn't be in the side as our frontline spinner. He's been probably our 2nd best batsman of the series, so why not give him a shot at opening? He'll be better than Compton, Robson & Lyth whatever way, no doubt.

As he gets bowled!

Ali is s definitely a lot better than where he's playing.

Rarely goes for sod all.

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
So, Nasser Hussain thinks Moeen Ali should be given a shot to open for England, in place of the walking wicket Lyth.

Fancy having another discussion about that, Matty?

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
There was never a better time to give another opener a chance. Lyth deserved a shot, but he has fallen way, way short, and there is no redeeming part of his game that makes you think he can turn it around.

Bottler is not a Test batsman. It's that simple.

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
Bairstow needs to do a lot more.
Pakistan in the UAE and S Africa away will be the making or breaking of players like him. Tough test.

I know they are trying to be loyal to Lyth but he just doesn't look the part. Painted themselves into a bit of a corner and personally I would have played Hales at the Oval. Now if they change they are starting someone else off new.

There are a few on notice for me .... Lyth, Buttler, Bairstow, Ali & depending on the UAE maybe Bell.

It's going to look a bit odd celebrating an Ashes series victory after an innings defeat.

I am GUTTED we didn't have the ability to make it 4-1.

Not sure what has happened to Buttler.
Was always a confident aggressive player whatever his flaws but looks very apologetic and LIMP at the moment.

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
Big second innings for a number of players, Sven son.

The selectors have already been more than generous with LOLth. He needs runs or he has to go.
Buttler has been woeful, but imagine they'll stick with him.
Bairstow is another they need to make a judgement on quickly, for me. This is his 17th test, he's averaging less than 30, and has a grand total of ZERO hundreds. That's a hell of a lot of chances, and his 50 in the last test wasn't especially convincing. If they've decided he's getting a run in the side, given Buttlers form I'd probably even look at giving him the gloves to make room for the second spinner and try to find a long term opening partner for Cook.

Re: Official Thread for the 5th Ashes Test - ENGLAND vs Australia, The Oval
Maybe both teams are a bit shit?

But only one of them has admitted it and will change their Captain & half the team.
